Nationally known writer of ghost and pirate tales, Nancy Roberts, is famous for her true stories of piracy from the colonial period and her well researched stories of the supernatural. She is winner of a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association of State and Regional History. Author of more than 25 books (from Doubleday, the University of South Carolina Press, John F. Blair, University of North Carolina Press and others), Roberts, often termed the "First Lady of Folklore," credits the praise of writer Carl Sandburg as the start of her career.
She introduces us to the buccaneers of New England and the South in her book "Blackbeard and Other Pirates of the Atlantic Coast." Wearing a pirate costume at her storytellings, Roberts brings to life the adventurers of an exciting period of American history. We meet Blackbeard who was probably the most terrifying of them all, along with Carolina's glamorous but ferocious girl pirate, Anne Bonny. Few men could match Anne's wit or her sword!
Storyteller Roberts tells her stories with a nerve-tingling immediacy. The encounters with pirates and apparitions "sound as if they are happening right now," according to listeners.
Comments from some of the places she has spoken:
"Marvelous story telling . . . you packed them in," says the North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC.
"The best program we have had this year!" comments Northern Illinois University.
"Nancy Roberts captivates her audience with her stories of pirates and ghosts. We plan to have her return for more performances," says Kiawah Island Resort, SC.
Georgia's Brunswick-Glynn Regional Library writes the publisher of one of her books, "A million thanks for sending Nancy Roberts our way again. She was great."
School librarians report:
"We have seen more interest in reading after Nancy Roberts has been here than ever before."
One boy declared, "Discovering your books changed my life. I began reading again."
